The final days of our trip would be spent exploring just some of the many small niche museums scattered throughout the greater Tokyo region. Most are hidden gems within more suburban areas and usually require a bit of public transport know-how and a willingness to walk a fair distance but in my experience have always been worth it.

PAX Aus – Melbourne 2015

Pax Aus 2015

I’m pretty sure it was the day after Pax Aus 2014 we decided we definitely wanted to come back and experience the convention all over again. We quickly snapped up tickets after they went on sale and impatiently waited until October to set off to Melbourne and get our hands on the latest new games and developments.

PAX Aus 2015 was once again jammed packed with many new titles from both big names and small developers. After a full pass of the entire expo hall, we found ourselves hovering through the many indie games featured in the PAX Rising section with our favourites including the wacky Inflatality, the swinging bonanza Swordy and the mountain climbing multiplayer Goat Punks. There were of course so many other awesome games and exhibitors as well but we’d be here all day talking about them :P.

Photography Basics Workshop

October 22, 2015
Photography workshop Brisbane

Last Saturday I attended Workshop‘s Photography Basics class, led by the wonderful Camille Santiago. Though I’ve been fumbling around with photography for years, it was nice to go back and refresh my knowledge on the core settings and to have some parts more clearly explained. It was also so lovely to properly meet and chat with Camille, who I have been admiring for years since I started following her blog.

After running through all the theory behind the workings of a camera, we set off to the Cultural Centre and later Southbank to put what we had learned into practice. I forced myself to mostly use my 50mm prime lens which I’ll admit to neglecting lately. I have a whole new appreciation for using the aperture mode on my camera now than ever before and for the first time I actually properly shot in full Manual, something which I’ve always been apprehensive and not confident about using. Definitely need to keep practicing though.

Oz Comic Con Brisbane 2015 - Waiting in Line

Oz Comic Con was back in Brisbane again building upon last year’s convention with new star speakers, a large variety of exhibitors and game areas along with a range of creatives in Artist Alley. We went on the Saturday to see some of the Stargate actors, check out the main floor and for the first time watch one of the cosplay events. Here are some photos of the event!

Japan Trip 2015: Day 7 – 9

Japan Trip 2015 - Edo-Tokyo Museum

See Day 1 – 3    |    See Day 4 – 6     |    See Day 10 – 13

After days of searching out cherry blossoms it was time to soak in some other Tokyo destinations. The second half of our trip would be spent exploring sights that we had never visited before, located in the more suburban outlying areas of the city.

While I’ve been to Tokyo Disneyland several times, I’d never taken much interest in its sister theme park DisneySea which is the considered more adult friendly park (a lot more thrilling rides and apparently they serve alcohol on the premises). After some convincing from the boyfriend we decided to go there instead of Disneyland. While we didn’t really get to fully enjoy the park due to arriving later in the day, I’m happy that I conceded and got to experience something new.

Japan Trip 2015: Day 4 – 6

Japan Trip 2015 - Sakura / cherry blossoms on the Meguro River

See Day 1 – 3    |    See Day 7 – 9    |    See Day 10 – 13

Our next few days in Tokyo would be a lot calmer with no scooting across town to visit several different sights in one day. Instead we would be just taking time to enjoy a few select destinations that we had been meaning to visit from the beginning of our trip.

We dedicated a day to visiting one of our favourite places, Akihabara, in the hopes of finding new anime figurines for our collection. This involves walking slowly through stores scanning display cabinets, digging behind boxes that completely fill the shelves and crouching down low to peer behind items in the front row, hoping to find that elusive figure you want. It’s definitely one of our mild obsessions as we would come back time and time again to check for anything new over the course of our stay.

Japan Trip 2015: Day 1 – 3

Japan Trip 2015 - Ueno Park Sakura Flowerts

See Day 4 – 6    |    See Day 7 – 9     |    See Day 10 – 13

Back in March the boyfriend and I were jet setting across the ocean again for our third trip (my fourth!) to Tokyo after finding a fortunately cheap airline deal. This trip would be special compared to our previous travels as we would be arriving just as the cherry blossoms were coming into season and would able to witness the beautiful floral display first hand.

While we slowly acclimatized to the much colder weather, we spent the first few days exploring some old haunts from our last trip. The first day we explored Ikebukuro’s many shops, restaurants and manga/anime otaku stores including hitting up Sunshine City to visit the Pokémon Center MEGA TOKYO store. The next morning we bought ourselves bentos from the local train station grocery before heading out to Yoyogi Park to enjoy our breakfast while people watching. This was also where we caught our first glimpses of the cherry blossoms, just beginning to bloom along the walkway.

Watercolour Christmas cards and gifts tags

January 4, 2015
Watercolour Christmas cards
Watercolour Christmas cards.

Christmas and New Year have come and gone and I hope you all had a wonderful time during the break. Following on from the last three years I made my own Christmas cards and gift tags again, this time (really) trying not to make them too complicated. I went back to watercolours but also played around with using masking fluid in the making process.

Brisbane Supanova 2014 – Finally indoors and in air con

December 2, 2014
Brisbane Supanova 2014
Brisbane Supanova 2014

My final convention for the year was of course Brisbane’s Supanova, now held at the much nicer Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. No more fighting the November heat, watching cosplayers melt away all while trying to manoeuvre through cramped spaces this time round. With the new fully enclosed venue, we stayed cool and shaded from the sun and enjoyed the convention’s new space. There were lots of regular vendors plus a few new ones and it was great to see so many well put-together cosplays. Below are my photos from the day 🙂

PAX Aus – Melbourne 2014

We escaped the Brisbane heat and endured Melbourne’s unpredictable weather to attend the 2nd PAX Australia game convention. We spent the whole day wandering through the exhibition hall trying out new and upcoming technology and playing some of the many featured games, particularly those by indie developers. We also got a chance to attend one of many panels that were running throughout the day with speakers from all different sectors in the industry. Below are a selection of photos from our adventures at our first PAX!
