Sex, Drugs & Helvetica – Brisbane 2014

The Sex, Drugs & Helvetica conference was back in Brisbane last month with another great line-up of creatives to share the highs, lows and everything in between of a selected project. The day was filled with interesting insights, sound advice and lots of laughs and I’m glad I got the chance to attend the conference once again.

Oz Comic Con – Brisbane 2014

Last Saturday we headed to the city to attend the first Brisbane Oz Comic Con! While our main goal of the day was to get the last of our SG-1 autographs from the lovely Chris Judge, we also wanted to check out how it fared against other Brisbane conventions (mainly Supanova LBR) and what the stalls had to offer in the form of precious loot! Photos of the event were of course taken to share just a slice of what I came across on the day πŸ™‚

Analogue / Digital – Brisbane 2014 (Day 2)

Analogue/Digital 2014
Analogue/Digital 2014

Who would’ve thought you could have a conference inside a movie theatre? I certainly didn’t but that’s exactly where the Brisbane Analogue/Digital 2014 Conference was held. Quite a good venue choice actually with nice comfy seats! I managed to attend the second day back in May with speakers from respected agencies and individual artists. It was my first time attending an A/D event so was interesting to see what had to offer.

6 month catch-up

6 month catch-up - my office desk
6 month catch-up

Time has gotten away from me since the start of the year and I haven’t really felt like writing. I’ve had a few posts planned for a while now but just haven’t had the motivation to finish them, which is frustrating because I’ve wanted to post more. To try and get myself back into the swing of it I’d thought I’d do a quick catch-up post about some of the things that I’ve been up to over the last 6 months to cover my gap of absence.

All I want for Christmas is cards! Handmade Christmas Cards and Gift Tags

Christmas Cards 2013
Christmas Cards 2013

A very, very belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all! Hope you all enjoyed your break!

Apart from the usual Christmas shopping, I once again decided to set myself the task of creating my own Christmas cards and gift tags. This year I wanted to make cards that were easy to put together but as always there was more to it then I expected :/. I also decided to write up instructions for these cards as there was such interest in my two previous Christmas posts (here and here) over the December break. Hope they help you make your own wonderful creations!

The inspiration for this year’s cards came from leftover twine I’ve been collecting from wrapping gifts. I have a habit of over estimating how much I’ll need and usually end up cutting off the extra. I decided that the cards would use the twine by threading it through to make shapes and patterns.

Semi-Permanent – Brisbane 2013

Once again, Semi-Permanent returned to Brisbane for its 6th year with eight new talented speakers. From artists to architects, the Brisbane line-up seemed to be one of the most diverse range of creatives we’ve ever had. It was refreshing to spend the day sitting and listening to their stories about their humble beginnings up to their work and experiences now.

Crowds, cosplay and hot weather at Supanova Brisbane 2013

Supanova – Brisbane 2013

It was great to be able to attend this years Brisbane Supanova on Saturday after being unable to come last year. Every time I go the weather seems to get hotter and the crowds seem to get bigger. There was also lots of cosplayers of course and I admire their efforts to wear full body costumes in the November heat! It’s interesting to see the trends within the community, lots of Batmans (batmen?) and Gotham related characters, Attack on Titan uniforms with full vertical maneuvering equipment and  many more that made me realize I’m not up to date with some pop culture references *sigh*.

Anyway, here are my photos from the day!

Sex, Drugs & Helvetica Brisbane 2013

On the 6th of September I was fortunate enough to attend Brisbane’s first Sex, Drugs & Helvetica graphic design conference. I was excited to see the great line-up of designers that would each be talking about one of their projects – from initial beginnings to the final product. The conference, held in the Garden Theatre at QUT, had a great turn out and the speakers gave great insights into their thought processes and the challenges they faced.

A look at Japanese design and online technology

Japanese Design - Billboards in Tokyo
Billboards in Tokyo

Japan is a place that I know many designers and non-designers alike are fascinated by. Whether it’s the history, the culture and subsequent sub-cultures, the novelties or just the food, Japan has something to interest everybody. During my trip my May I couldn’t help but observe Japan’s approach to design and advertising. I also got to experience using some Japanese websites before the trip and noticed distinct differences in style and functionality.

Over the next two posts I will not only be looking at design of Japanese media but also Japan’s technology use and online behaviour in comparison to our own.

Finders Keepers Markets – 2013 Autumn/Winter

Finders Keepers - Brisbane 2013 (Autumn/Winter)
My sticker that gave me entry into the markets

With surprisingly good weather last weekend, I spent my Saturday afternoon at the Brisbane Finders Keepers markets seeing all of the wonderfully crafted creations by amazingly talented people. As always, the markets not only had stalls but also some tasty food delicacies and local musicians playing outside in the gardens. I stupidly forgot to take more cash with me but I still managed to bring back quite a haul!

Unlike previous times I’ve gone, a gold coin donation was required for entry into the markets, not that I’m complaining (totally worth it). Inside was bustling as always and there were so many stalls I wanted to buy from, especially those that had cool and quirky cards. Some of my new favourites were hello lemon, Hannakin, Hungry Designs, Each to Own, Beau Wylie Illustration, Team Kitten, Rabbit & the Duck and Lauren Carney Art. It was also good to see Bespoke Letterpress, Sharon Muir, Ella Mobbs and Beneath The Sun back again ^_^.
