Getting crafty at the 2011 Brisbane Finders Keepers Markets

Finders Keepers – Brisbane 2011

Despite the overcast weather and the urge to sleep in, I managed to pull myself out of bed on Sunday and head over to the Brisbane Finders Keepers Markets being held at the Old Museum. I’ve seen lots of people talking about their great finds and purchases at these markets online so I decided to go and check it out for myself.

Before I get onto the markets, can I just say how beautiful The Old Museum exterior is! Before I looked up where the venue for the markets was, I always thought this was a church. I really love the brick work layout with the contrasting reds and yellows as well as the lovely archways.

Favourite Artists: Yoshitaka Amano

Yoshitaka Amano
Yoshitaka Amano

It seemed fitting to post about Amano’s work since he did the concept art for Final Fantasy X, which I only just finished! I know that game came out years ago, however it’s been in my pile of shame of ages anf I thought I should finish it (the ending was so sad, I got teary eyed :() – but back to the artist! This week I’m featuring Yoshitaka Amano, a well known Japanese artist who has created numerous character and logo designs as well as concept illustrations for Square Enix.

His work is always so full of detail and beautiful wispy lines that seem to just flow through the artwork. I like how he uses colour as well; it’s not exactly bursting out of the canvas like Sylvia Ji’s paintings, but he knows how to balance it with the surrounding space and work with tones. His illustrations are often of fantasy/sci-fi subject matter and have a lovely asian styling to them, despite being influenced by Western comic books. They remind me a lot of traditional Japanese paintings actually, in the way he uses colour, the thin pencil lines and the intricate details.

Unique Everyday Design: Bikes, Cutting Boards, Shower Curtains and Pretty Toast!

June 28, 2011
Everyday Design
Time for some more unique designs and I have quite a few of them! I guess I’ve been on the lookout for them since my last post :|Sanomagic Wooden BicyclesSource: Cool Hunting

First off, I should say that this isn’t exactly a unique everyday design because there are a lot of different bike designs around. I still wanted to post about it though because these bikes are out of wood! WOOD! They’re made of mahogany by a ninth-generation ship wright. This allows them to be lighter, with the bikes even been raced professionally and scoring well. I think it’s great when designers start experimenting with new materials for familiar items. You can read more about theses wooden bikes here.

Birthday Cards Ahoy!

June 24, 2011
Pikachu and Clarice Cliff Card

I’ve been pretty busy lately so I haven’t had a chance to get back into my anatomy drawing but in the meantime I’ve been making cards for my sister and mum whose birthday are within a week of each other! I wanted to make each card about items they really like ^_^.

The first one was a cute Pikachu card for my sister who is a huge Pokemon fan. I wanted to challenge myself to try my pattern style within a custom shape like Pikachu’s body. I found a picture and printed it out before I started to draw out the pattern. Once I worked that out I got some cooking paper, traced him in and coloured the back with a 6B pencil before retracing it to the special paper I use for cards.

It’s a wee bit chilly at the 2011 Brisbane Winter Festival

June 21, 2011
Brisbane Winter Festival

The southern hemisphere is approaching the middle of the winter season and what better way to enjoy the chilly weather than to hold a festival for it! This is the first time that I’m aware of that Brisbane has held a Winter Festival. I first heard about it on Twitter when someone tweeted about an ice skating rink being set up in King George Square. I eagerly looked into it and by the end of the day I had booked tickets. One of my friends managed to organise a small group of us to meet up and go to the same session and also check out what else was on offer.

Favourite Artists: Jasper Goodall

Jasper Goodall - Pink Polish
Jasper Goodall – Pink Polish

This weeks favourite artist is Jasper Goodall, someone whom I only discovered recently even though he’s apparently been quite well known in the industry since the late nineties. He was one of the last speakers at the 2010 Brisbane Semi-Permanent Conference and I was completely taken by his illustrations and skill.

From what I’ve read, Goodall is known for his images seen in The Face magazine as well as his Poster Girl Series and cover artwork for *shudder* Muse. His images have combined illustration and photography and often have a fantasy element to them. I admire the way he plays with colour and meshes different mediums together. His recent projects like the New Goulston Street art and this Rene Grau inspired cutout really show off his talent of working with negative space and minimalist style.

Favourite Artists: Tim Biskup

Tim Biskup
Tim Biskup

My next favourite artist is Tim Biskup with his wonderful characters, colours and conceptual pieces. I discovered him around same time I was searching for artists who create that ‘1950s storybook illustration‘ style, though I now can’t recall how I came across his work specifically. I do believe it was for researching my graduate project though back in 2009.

I’ve been debating on whether or not to write about him because his work has evolved since I first started following him. His latest works have become more surreal/cubist/structured in nature, while I prefer his older whimsical pieces. His website seems to have also changed and he doesn’t have a lot of work featured. Luckily I have some saved work on my computer and there’s always Google :P.

Back to basics – Drawing

June 6, 2011
Skeleton Head Sketch
Skeletons

I’ve been meaning to get back into drawing more regularly for some time now. In my high school years I used to love it and spent a lot of time doodling and sketching in my workbooks. When I went to uni, the workload built up and I lost interest in drawing to instead focus on my work. Since I finished my studies, I’ve wanted to get back to the skill level I was at before I started.

My boyfriend gave me a huge tablet for Christmas and I’ve been feeling guilty of not using it much except for cleaning files and general experimenting and I’ve felt pretty bad about it 🙁

Favourite Artists: Kevin Dart

Kevin Dart - Wake Up Yuki 7!
Kevin Dart – Wake Up Yuki 7!

Time for another favourite artist of mine! Today I’m featuring the wonderful LA talent Kevin Art, whom I believe I discovered via the Grain Edit.

I love his work because it’s that classic 60s illustration style. His Yuki 7 images are especially awesome to me because they have that whole female spy thing going on and as a fan of James Bond, it’s right up my alley. I also really love the background paintings he’s done – they remind me of the lovely scenes you see in series like Samurai Jack or Pixer/Disney concepts (he’s actually worked for Disney!).
