Japan Trip 2013 - Todaiji Temple in Nara
Todaiji Temple

With the Tokyo part of our trip over (see part 1), we now had six days in Osaka filled with local sightseeing and trips to nearby areas.

Despite the rainy weather, our first day included walking along Tenjinbashi-suji shopping street as well as seeing the Tenmangu shrine and the House and Living Museum. We also managed to squeeze in a trip to Osaka Aquarium that afternoon. We spent a day in Kyoto to visit Gion and the Higashiyama District along with a train ride south to the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Another day we travelled to Iga-Ueno and visited Iga Ninja Museum, a personal favourite of mine and worth the long trip out into the country. On our final free day, we went to Nara to see Todaiji Temple with the largest bronze Buddha statue and other shrines within Nara Park. Other highlights included a day at Universal Studios where we had a caricature drawn of us and the wonderful Yakiniku Rokko in Shinsaibashi with all its tasty barbecue meat.

To Japan and back – Part 1

Japan Trip 2013
To Japan and back

At the start of May, our wait was finally over. Last year, we had booked our flights for a second trip back to Japan, giving ourselves time to research what we wanted to see while patiently waiting as many friends and colleagues went before us. But now it was our turn to head over for a 2 week (and a bit) holiday in the land of the rising sun.

We landed in Tokyo during the evening and travelled to our hotel with excitement. Over the next 10 days, we explored new areas such as Sunshine City and Otome Road in Ikebukuro, the Sword Museum hidden in the Shinjuku suburbs as well as the Warehouse District and Candy Alley. We spent nearly a whole day in Nakano Broadway searching for figurines, saw a show at the Robot Restaurant, visited the Imperial Palace and an took a much awaited trip to the Ghibli Museum. We were also lucky enough to spend a day at the Sumo tournament and saw a evening performance of Kabuki. This was all on top of visiting some of our favourite places like Harajuku, Shibuya, Asakusa and of course Akihabara. Before we knew it our time in Tokyo was over and we had bought two extra bags filled to the brim with souvenirs. But now we had catch the shinkansen across the country to Osaka. My birthday happened to fall on the same day so as a treat we ate Disney chocolates during the ride and later that night discovered pOundhouse and had some delicious cake.

The 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT7)

A few weeks ago while I was in the city, I impulsively decided to check out the The 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at GOMA and QAG. While I was a little rushed (I had about 45 minutes), I managed to see nearly all of the artwork from the exhibition.

The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) is the only exhibition in the world to exclusively display art from Asia, the Pacific and Australia. In GOMA, the artwork will instantly hit you as you enter the doors while other artists can be found in select areas of QAG.

Surprise Birthday Webpage in February!

Birthday Webpage in February
Birthday Webpage in February

I know the Card Project is over but I couldn’t help making a new birthday message for someone who missed out last year.

Last April, my friend moved into the same office space as me and we became good desk buddies. While we’ve now both moved on to new places, I felt I should give her something for my birthday since I wasn’t able to before (her birthday was a couple of months before we met).

Favourite Artists: Katie Daisy

Favourite Artists - Trust your Heart by Katie Daisy
Trust your Heart

It’s been a while since I wrote a favourite artist post but this one only just caught my eye recently (well sorta – explained further down) and she needs to be talked about! Today I’m looking at the wonderfully whimsical, colourful and spring inspired work of Katie Daisy.

Katie Daisy is a freelance illustrator originally from Illinois who uses both watercolour and acrylic paints to create illustration and lettering pieces. I’ve actually admired her work once before – I reblogged one of her pieces on my tumblr blog in June last year. It wasn’t till someone recently posted about her work that I checked out her portfolio and was amazed by her lovely paintings and pictures.

What should I draw?

What should I draw?`
What should I draw?

I’m trying to incorporate drawing more into my routine, setting aside some time in each week to just spend time sketching stuff, whether it’s part of a project or just a small piece like this. This was my little drawing from last night after just sitting there, staring at a blank piece of paper, wondering the same question.

A little update

February 3, 2013

I haven’t really posted anything since the start of the year and I apologise for that. It’s due to being partly busy and partly lazy. I’m hoping to get back into it, I just need to work out a better schedule I’m more likely to stick to that lets me work on other personal projects as well (to be shared in due time). I’m hoping to do a couple more favourite artists and unique everyday design posts plus try out a couple of new types of posts ^_^.

In the mean time, I leave with this little piece of inspiration from Brain Picking’s article “How to Write with Style: Kurt Vonnegut’s 8 Keys to the Power of the Written Word“.

The last of the cards! December birthday cards

December birthday cards
December birthday cards

Yes, it’s true – I’m wrapping up the card project with the end of 2012. It’s been fun creating so many different designs and illustrations for my friends and family and I feel I’ve learned a lot from the process. After two years though it’s time to move onto some new projects so I won’t be making any more cards (except for maybe a couple here and there ^_~).

Apart from my Christmas cards, I created three birthday cards for friends during December. All of them were handmade, with some even having a bit of interactivity (apart from the obvious opening and closing).
